Most of the world knew a war was coming.

Sarajevo a part of Austria-Hungary( now separately Austria and Hungary) had some people who weren’t happy living there. So the Austro-Hungarian archduke Franz Ferdinand with his wife went to Sarajevo to look into the matter. His car route was published already before his leaving. He was assassinated.

Somes assassins waited on the streets throwing bombs at him but they missed. The archduke goes into hiding and then takes a wrong turn unfortunately meeting up with one of the failed assassins and gets shot dead.

Austria-Hungary was angry about this and thought the Serbian government had something to do about this. Austria-Hungary’s government talks with its ally Germany and Germany and Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia.

CLIMAX

Serbia, which is protected by Russia that is allied with France declare war on Austria-Hungary and Germany. Montenegro, a small country in southwest Serbia joins the war as a part of the Allies who support Serbia against the Central Powers who are Austria-Hungary and Germany.

France is kind of allied with Britain, but Britain stays out of it and that is good for Germany as they had a plan called the Schlieffen Plan. Germany knew Russia was big clumsy and would take time to get ready for war.

The commander that would lead this plan was Helmuth Von Moltke. The Schlieffen Plan was to take over France from the German border, defeat France and move those troops to Russia and win the war. But there was one problem, France had loads of forts and defenses at the French-German border and Germany didn’t have time on their hands to fight them all. So they decide to go around France, through Belgium, this starts The Battle of Liège.

Germany thought small Belgium would just sit around do nothing while they crossed the borders but Belgium fought back and was pretty good. Soon Britain joined in too.

Russia was ready for war way earlier than expected. Germany pushed back France and Britain with all they had. After every hit, Germany lost its supplies and resources. Britain took advantage of this and started a Naval Blockade to stop the supply of food. Germany dug in, and the allies did the same, this resulted in trench warfare.

Germany started using chemical weapons, throwing them in trenches, the Allies did the same.

Germany also sunk civilian ships, one of the ships that they sunk had hundreds of Americans aboard. This triggered America to join the Allies.

The fresh American troops arrived and they pushed back Germany from Paris and that was it.

On November 11, 1918, at 11 o’clock Germany surrendered. At the peace Treaty of Versailles, they were forced to reduce their military, accept war guilt and pay fine. In the end, 17 million died and 20 million were wounded and some beyond recovery.
